Eight Personal Habits to Polish Your Professional Brand

When you think about brands in business most likely your mind goes to a particular company and the concept behind what they offer. But brands aren’t just for corporations. Every individual has his or her own professional brand that consists of who you are and what it feels like to do business with you. Just as companies continually work to enhance the value of their brand, individuals should put that same level of investment into their own professional value. Below are eight high-value ways to add worth to your brand.

  1. Display confidence — It’s a lot easier for people to trust and feel good about you if they see you believe you have what it takes to deliver your product or service. If you’re not confident in what you’re doing, ask yourself what you’d need to know or have in place to get there. Then, do what it takes to get to the level you need to feel confident in your ability as a professional.
  2. Think strategically — Knowing where you need to be one, five, ten years down the road helps you to make the right choices today. Whether it’s making decisions for your business or someone else’s, thinking with the goal in mind gives a purposeful basis for each option you consider.
  3. Develop a sense of caring — People do business with people. Taking time to ask questions and really listen to your clients when they’re talking shows you’re not just interested in them as customers, but as human beings.
  4. Show enthusiasm — If you’re not excited about what you offer, then who else will be? People going through the motions, trading days for dollars, don’t excite people to come on board. Take time to really think about how what you do can help others be better, get excited about it, and the rest will happen automatically. Enthusiasm is a tough thing to hide when it’s genuine.
  5. Be ready to take smart risks — Being successful often means being willing to take a path that’s not clearly marked. Nothing in life worth having is 100% risk-free. Study up, talk to trusted advisers, then go for it!
  6. Be honest — Truth is something that’s difficult to find in the world of business. When it comes to what you offer, it’s tempting to promise the moon and maybe a minor planet too. Don’t promise something you can’t reasonably deliver. Be honest with your clients and prospects about what they can expect as a result of doing business with you.
  7. Use humor — While you’re not competing for a spot on the Late Night Show, keeping it light can show your clients and prospects you’re a real person who is someone they can feel comfortable around. Life can be pretty stressful at times. Being able to offer a good laugh or even a small chuckle will go further than you think.
  8. Always follow through — You could make a strong argument that this one is the most important one on the list. None of us have to think longer than a few seconds to remember a time recently when a business let us down. Those memories stick around for years and tend to be passed from one person to another. If you say you’ll do something, do it. Over-delivery is the goal for any successful professional.

Your personal brand is something you never stop developing. Nurturing your own brand takes the same level of care and attention that a company would spend on their brand. It’s what makes doing business with you unique and what keeps your clients returning to do business again.
