How to Harness the Power of Purpose

“I believe that purpose and principle, clearly understood and articulated, and commonly shared, are the genetic code of any healthy organization. To the degree that you hold purpose and principles in common among you, you can dispense with command and control. People will know how to behave in accordance with them, and they’ll do it in thousands of unimaginable, creative ways. The organization will become a vital, living set of beliefs.” –Dee Hock

Your purpose is the core of your brand. It’s why your customers stay loyal to you, why prospects choose to hire you, and why team members stick with you and perform their best.

Without a strong sense of purpose, a company or practice is a hollow shell that’s merely trying to push products and services. Without a sense of purpose, it will always be hard to find and keep clients, because you won’t be able to differentiate yourself.

If you’re feeling burnt out or aimless when it comes to your company or career purpose, take some time alone or with your team to think through why you’re doing what you’re doing. Consider what really matters to you. Understand exactly how you help your clients and how you make the world a better place. Ask yourself, “Why did I start this business?” “Why am I in this industry?” “How do I serve my clients?” Think in concrete, specific terms. Visualize yourself helping real people.

Once you get a clear picture of your purpose, write it down. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but those words will become your anchor. They’ll motivate you to keep going when times get tough. They’ll serve as a roadmap when it’s time to make difficult business decisions. They’ll form the foundation of your customer service strategy. They’ll energize your team and encourage growth.

Your purpose is not only the essence of who you are, it’s also the guide that will take you where you want to go in the future.
