Connect Your Passion to Your Mission to Stay Motivated in Your Work

If you’ve strategically developed a mission statement that is truly yours, you understand why your work is important. But sometimes that knowledge doesn’t result in motivation. Maybe you’re working a lot of hours and you’re just tired. Maybe the words just aren’t connecting with your heart. Here are 3 ways to connect your passion to your mission and stay motivated in your work.

  1. Remember your values. Why did you choose the career you’re in? Are you a maker, contributing things of value to a manufactured-in-China world? Are you compassionate, helping people in need? Are you a teacher, sharing knowledge that will make others’ lives better? Are you a problem-solver, reducing people’s stress and anxiety? Remember what you really care about and how your career helps you live those values out.
  2. Use visualization. When you can clearly picture how your work is making a difference, you’ll be more motivated to keep at it. Envision your favorite client’s happy face when he or she benefits from your work. Imagine the prospects out there who are struggling and haven’t yet found you. Think about individual people with specific problems that you can fix, and then see yourself meeting those needs.
  3. Fall in love with the process. Sometimes we over-value our goals and under-value the process we go through to reach those goals. Achieving a goal is great, but so is the change that happens within us as we push through tough times, hone our skills, and strengthen character. When we view the process for what it is — the thing that will shape us into the people we want to be — we can truly love the process. Because without it, we’d never grow.

Staying motivated isn’t easy, but taking time to work through these mental exercises will help you be focused and fulfilled.
