“The Power of Yet” Means That We Can Grow Into What We Want to Become

Too many of us don’t allow ourselves the luxury of growth. Because we failed at something today, we think we aren’t capable of anything more. Believing we are only as good as we are today keeps us locked in the status quo. And it’s a false notion.

Stanford Professor Carol Dweck, in her TED talk given in November 2014, tells about a Chicago school who gives a grade of “Not Yet” instead of “F”. “F” seems final. It stamps a student as not intelligent enough to make it. But “Not Yet” is closer to to the truth. With more studying, more tutoring, more work, the student can make the grade needed to move forward.

Our abilities can be developed. We aren’t stuck with what we’re born with. When we take a test and don’t pass, make an attempt and don’t reach the goal, or try something new and don’t excel, we can learn from our experience and seek out instruction to grow and improve.

We’re capable of so much more than we think we are, because we limit ourselves to where we are today. We need to focus on the effort, the process, and what we need to learn to take the next step. When we change our mindset to realize we’re simply “not yet” where we want to be, we open up the opportunity for growth.
